F. A. Roberts & Associates Ltd. provided the engineering support for the welding and fabrication of the overpass, river crossing and pedestrian spans of the new Disraeli Freeway linking Winnipeg’s downtown with Henderson Highway.
Pictured here is the lifting of an assembly of six girder segments forming one of the pairs of curved girders for the traffic span over the Red River. Challenges included assembly of the segments into the girder pairs on a barge straddling the river surrounded by the winter ice. The lift was accomplished using tandem crawler cranes on a pair of lifting barges. Custom lifting equipment was designed to allow lifting the curved sections while maintaining a horizontal position so that set down was simultaneous on all bearings.
The girders were fabricated by Capitol Steel Inc. from low temperature weathering steel using mechanized submerged arc and flux cored arc welding processes.
