Pictured is one of the ice cutting machines used on sensitive areas of the Red River to groove the ice to a depth of 2 to 4 feet in advance of deploying the Amphibex which breaks up the ice for spring flows.
F.A. Roberts & Associates Ltd. was engaged to design a flotation system after one of the units broke through the ice and sank in 2009. Seen here is the hydraulically operated outrigger flotation system now used for these ice cutting units. Floats are raised for transportation. Flotation chambers are foam-filled aluminum structures.
